OT: Here are some more common themes as you continue to read through the book of Psalms this week:

• The arrogance of the wicked
• A call for God to arise and judge his enemies and demonstrate his majesty and power
• God’s rule over the nations
• The relating of what God has done for his people throughout history and of his people’s stubborn rebellion
• A call for God to deliver us from our enemies and to forgive our sins that cause this oppression
• A call from God for us to defend the poor and the needy
• A longing to be in the house or dwelling-place of God and the pilgrimage towards it

NT: As we come to the end of Romans this week, note the following development of Paul’s points:

• Although not many Jews have responded to Christ now, the effect of many Gentiles believing is that more Jews will believe
• Again their salvation is based on  faith not good works
• In response to God’s mercy and grace we should offer ourselves as living sacrifices and this will be expressed in various ways according to our gifts, and in general good works
• It  also means that we should be good citizens, submitting to governing authorities; we should also love one another and live holy lives
• We should show our love for one another by not arguing over disputable matters and not judge harshly those who are hanging on to some religious practices
• Paul explains his calling as an apostle to the Gentiles and expresses his desire to come and visit them
• He passes on his greetings to specific people within the church in Rome and passes on greetings from his fellow-workers, thuis hsowing the personal and relational aspect of ministry, leadership and the church.
