Weekly Support Reading (13th - 19th August)

The explanation of salvation continues in Romans:

  • God’s grace is not an excuse to go on sinning - we died to sin and our old selves were buried at baptism so that we can now live a new life
  • We should consider ourselves dead to sin and no longer under sin’s power
  • We are also set free from the Law which only served to show us what sinners we were
  • We can now serve in the new way of the Spirit and can learn to live by the Spirit who is the first fruits of our full salvation, which is still to come and for which we and all creation long.
  • In the meantime, God is working all things for our good as we are chosen and called by his purpose to become like Jesus
  • Salvation is all by the undeserved grace of God – for both Jew and Gentile – and not by what we do.
  • We don’t get right with God by law but by simple faith, even though many Jews were still trying to be saved by the Law
  • This doesn’t mean that God has rejected the Jews – some were being saved
